Kanji are complex symbols mainly adopted from logographic Chinese characters, and they are used to write most content words. However, a kanji and a Chinese character may be the same in form but have completely different meanings. Hiragana are rounded symbols used for grammatical words, including particles. While Katakana is mainly used for indicating a reading of a kanji in a dictionary or transcription of other borrowed foreign language words etc. Hiragana and Katakana script each contains 46 symbols, while kanji is said to include 50,000 characters, of which 3500 are commonly used.
