About Norwegian

Norwegian is the language primarily spoken in Norway with a total number of 5.5 million native speakers. Outside Norway, Norwegian is also spoken in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, UK, Spain, Canada and USA. Norwegian alphabet is based on Latin alphabet and it has the same 29 letters as that of Danish. They are A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I,J,K,L,M,N,O,P,Q,R,S,T,U,V,W,X,Y,Z, Æ,Ø and Å. Norwegian also uses letters with diacritics such as é, è, ê, ó, ò, â, and ô etc to clarify the meaning of words.

In order to type these special letters on a non-Norwegian keyboard, an easy way is to use keyboard shortcuts on your computer. For example, now you want to type Norwegian letter Æ on Windows, you just hold your ALT key then type 0198 on your activated Number Pad. If you need to type Norwegian on a regular basis, using keyboard shortcuts is obviously inefficient. In this case, you will need to install a Norwegian keyboard. A typical Norwegian keyboard will enable you to type Norwegian easily, but first you need to get familiar with its keyboard layout. Just like Danish keyboards, Norwegian keyboards have the dedicated keys for Æ,Ø and Å, but it differs from Danish keyboards in that the keys for Æ and Ø are swapped. To get familiar with the Norwegian keyboard layout fast, it is suggested that you buy a keyboard or a keyboard sticker of Norwegian, which has the Norwegian keyboard layout printed on it and can be placed on the surface of your existing keyboard.
