About Portuguese

Portuguese is a Romance language mainly spoken in Portugal as well as its former colonies of Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde, Guine-Bissau and Sao Tome e Principe. It has a total number of 250 speakers. Portuguese alphabet is the same as Latin alphabet while the letters K, W and Y are only used to write foreign loanwords. In addition, a few letters with diacritics are used in Portuguese, they are Áá, Ââ, Ãã, Àà, Çç, Éé, Êê, Íí, Óó, Ôô, Õõ, Úú.

To type those letters with diacritics in Portuguese on a keyboard where they are not available, an easy way is to use keyboard shortcuts on your computer. For example, now you want to type Portuguese letter Ç on Windows, you just hold your ALT key then type 0199 on your activated Number Pad.
