About Vietnamese

Vietnamese is the mother tongue of Vietnamese people, spoken by about 85 million people in Vietnam and abroad. Vietnamese once was written using the modified Chinese writing system and much of its vocabulary has been borrowed from Chinese but now it uses Latin alphabet and additional diacritics. These diacritics include à, è, ì, ò, ù, á, é, í, ó, ú, ý, â, ê, î, ô, û, ã, ñ, õ, ð, Ð.

To type those special characters in Vietnamese, an easy way is to use keyboard shortcuts on your computer. For example, now you want to type Vietnamese letter â on Windows, you just hold your ALT key then type 0226 on your activated Number Pad. You can find a list of codes for those Vietnamese special characters for Windows, Mac and HTML here.

For those who need to type Vietnamese on a regular basis, using keyboard shortcuts is obviously inconvenient. In this case, you will need to install a Vietnamese keyboard. A typical Vietnamese keyboard will enable you to type Vietnamese easily, but first you need to get familiar with its keyboard layout. The Vietnamese keyboard layout is an extended QWERTY layout. Number keys corresponding to the American English keyboard are used to type diacritics and produce tonal marks such as grave accent, hook, tilde, acute accent etc. Here is how a typical Vietnamese keyboard looks like:

To get familiar with the Vietnamese keyboard layout fast, it is suggested that you buy a keyboard or a keyboard sticker of Vietnamese, which has the Vietnamese keyboard layout printed on it and can be placed on the surface of your existing keyboard. However, whether you want to type with a keyboard or a keyboard sticker you need to first install the Vietnamese keyboard.
