About Berkeley Logo Font

berkeley logo font

The University of California, Berkeley (also referred to as Berkeley, UC Berkeley) is a public research university located in Berkeley, California. Established in 1868, it is the flagship campus of the University of California system.

The font used for the logo of Berkeley is California Old Style, which is a serif font with unusually elongated descenders and a uniquely light style. The typeface was designed by American type designer Frederic W. Goudy in 1938 for the sole proprietary use of the University of California Press.

Several digitizations or revivals of this serif were created later for wider distribution such as Californian from Lanston Type Company, ITC Berkeley Oldstyle, and Californian from Font Bureau.

For the font used for the sans serif text (UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA) in the logo, it is Depot New Medium, a humanist sans serif designed by English type designer Chris Dickinson.
