The California State Lottery was created in 1984 with the mission to provide supplemental funding for public schools and colleges.

The logo consists of the “Sunny L” icon, the text “calottery” and the “SM”, or Service Mark symbol. The serif font for the text is Georgia Regular. Georgia is a transitional serif typeface designed in 1993 by Matthew Carter and tuned by Tom Rickner for the Microsoft Corporation. The original Georgia has two weights and it was updated in 2010 with more weights, styles and features by Monotype, Font Bureau and Matthew Carter.
