About Greek

Greek (Ελληνικά) is the official language of Greece, and one of the official languages of Cyprus and of the European Union.

The Greek language has been using the Greek alphabet since the 9th to 8th century BCE. Previously, Greek was written using writing systems including Linear B, a syllabic script, and Phoenician. The Greek writing system was based on Phoenician, but with alterations such as the inclusion of mandatory vowels for the first time in any writing system, making Greek the first true alphabet. Though there were some variations in the alphabet’s early days, in its current form there are 17 consonants and 7 vowels, each with an upper case and lower case form.

As with other aspects of Ancient Greek civilization, the language and writing system have had a lasting impact on European culture. Important works of literature and fundamental philosophical and scientific writings were originally in Greek, as was the New Testament of the Christian Bible. In other Western countries today, the Ancient Greek language is still studied as part of the discipline of Classics, while scientific vocabulary continues to be based on Greek linguistic roots. The Greek alphabet itself is also used in mathematics and science around the world today. Letters of the Greek alphabet are typically used to represent particular numbers in mathematics, and a variety of concepts in physics and other sciences.

Another crucial aspect of the Greek alphabet’s legacy is its importance to other writing systems. The word “alphabet” comes from alpha and beta, the first two letters of the Greek writing system, reflecting its influence on Latin writing. The spread of the Roman Empire and Christianity then brought the Latin alphabet to other parts of Europe and beyond, and it is now the writing system of many languages around the world. Other alphabets derived from the Greek system include Cyrillic, Coptic, Etruscan, and perhaps Armenian and Georgian.
