About Greek

Greek is the language now mainly spoken in the Greece and Cyprus and has about 13 million native speakers. Greek alphabet is the script used in the Greek writing system since 730 BC. Before that Linear B and Cypriot syllabary writing system are used. The Greek alphabet was formed on the basis of Phoenician alphabet. There are 24 letters in Greek alphabet from alpha to omega. Some of you may be very familiar with these symbols. Greek is such a great language in the human civilization that Greek roots are often seen in science and medicine vocabulary. Two of the main sources of international scientific vocabulary are Greek and Latin. For example, in mathematics, lower case pi (π) represents the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter and capital sigma (Σ) means summation. Originally, Greek was originally written from right to left, the left to right writing way has been established since the classical period.
